Synopsis

"From the Waist Up," the third in the "Elvis: The Great Performances" DVD series, focuses on Elvis Presley's first year on television (March 1956 to January 1957). His appearances on shows with the Dorsey Brothers, Milton Berle, Steve Allen, and especially Ed Sullivan captivated a rapidly expanding national audience with songs ranging from suggestive numbers like "Baby, Let's Play House" to more spiritual selections such as "Peace in the Valley." Based on the writings of Presley biographer Peter Guralnick (Last Train to Memphis) and narrated by U2's Bono, this volume offers a more documentary approach, covering familiar ground like his Sun Records beginnings and the arrival of Colonel Tom Parker. It's the only disc to cut some performances, though the complete songs from the 1957 Sullivan show at the end help compensate. --Sam Graham
