Synopsis

The opening scene introduces Thespis, Momus, and Thalie, who announce the play's subject: a comedy satirizing human foolishness. The story centers on a scheme by Jupiter to alleviate Juno’s jealousy. The plan involves convincing the water nymph Platée that Jupiter is in love with her. Mercury publicly declares Jupiter’s affection to Platée. When Jupiter appears first as a donkey and then as an owl, Platée calls upon the marsh birds, who frighten him. He quickly returns and professes his love for Platée, even proposing marriage. Amidst chaos, La Folie performs for the couple. However, Juno arrives just as they prepare to wed, ending the charade and taking Jupiter to the heavens. Humiliated, Platée realizes she’s been tricked and retreats to the marshes, as the chorus sings an ironic song in her honor.
