Synopsis

At the dawn of the 20th century, the film follows Zbyszko Cyganiewicz, a rising Polish athlete. It begins in his hometown where a traveling circus recruits a timid boy for a staged wrestling match to entertain audiences. The young man, however, approaches the performance with genuine strength and wins against a renowned wrestler in a legitimate contest. Angered by this, the circus manager fires him, but Zbyszko departs contentedly after two wrestler brothers who had been bullying him. He achieves widespread fame, competing in arenas worldwide. During a performance, he is serenaded by a tenor from the audience. While fame brings him attention, he remains dedicated to his sport. He exacts revenge on one of his former tormentors by defeating him in the ring. Later, attending a match in formal wear, he is challenged by the other brother and becomes involved in a violent fight, ultimately killing his opponent, ending his career.
