Synopsis

"Chronicles of a Lying Spirit" by Kelly Gabron isn't a straightforward portrayal of reality, but rather an examination of how Black history is shaped by film, television, magazines, and newspapers. The film uses a fictional persona, Kelly Gabron, to construct a personal history of an artist navigating a predominantly white, male-dominated artistic landscape. It combines images and text from a pre-existing scrapbook, narrated by "Kelly Gabron," gradually shifting the focus from the male narration about her (voiced by Chris Brown). The film presents this barrage of imagery, text, and voice twice, followed by a concluding section. The differing interpretations viewers have of the second presentation highlight the inherent challenges in trusting any media representation. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2016.
