Synopsis

While studying, Satō Makoto encountered documentary filmmaking during a visit to Minamata, the site of a major environmental disaster, and worked on Katori Naotaka’s *The Innocent Sea*. While touring Japan with the film, he met people living by the polluted Agano River in Niigata and decided to document their lives. The resulting film, *Living on the River Agano*, was completed after three years spent living with a crew of seven in the area, and quietly explored the impact of nature's destruction on the community's agriculture and fishing. Ten years later, after attending the funerals of those featured in the first film, Satō and his team returned to the Agano River. *Memories of Agano* is a poignant reflection on people, landscapes, stories, songs, and buildings fading into the past, highlighting the power of images and sound to bring history back to life.
