Synopsis

This documentary explores a lesser-known aspect of James Joyce's work: his Greek Notebooks. Filmed in Trieste during Bloomsday 2013, it uses slow-motion dance and accompanying text to transform the body into a repository of memory – of the body itself, of life, and of texts. Combining biographical details about Joyce and Mando Aravantinou with unconventional camera angles that distort the landscape, the film moves beyond realism, even within the setting of the Narrator's study. Ultimately, Joyce's letter "A request for a loan in Greek" emerges as a powerful commentary. The film weaves together various locations – Trieste, London, New York, and Athens – and languages – Greek and English. Beyond the familiar myth of Ulysses, the documentary suggests that Greek is intrinsically linked to the very essence of Ulysses himself.
