Synopsis

For over twenty years, Mike Hoolboom has been a powerful artistic chronicler of the AIDS epidemic. His deeply personal work moves beyond common portrayals of living with AIDS, exploring themes of vulnerability and spirituality. *Buffalo Death Mask* is a three-part film that blends visual imagery, interviews, and tactile elements to examine survival, grief, memory, love, and community. Hoolboom converses with visual artist Stephen Andrews, both long-term survivors of HIV, against a backdrop that evokes a dreamlike Toronto and its history. Hoolboom uniquely uses recycled footage to contemplate the meaning of enduring life in the face of loss, asking, "Why are we still here when so many are gone?"
