Karl Atticus is a name few recall, and those who do likely regret it. MORTAL REMAINS proves to be a remarkable independent film, presented as a documentary concerning the quest for a filmmaker whose career was so problematic that he’s practically been erased from cinematic records. The movie feels genuine thanks to carefully constructed details and performances that seem real, something often missing in smaller-budgeted movies. Accounts of the strange events involving Atticus and his work are shared by individuals who collaborated with him and observed his slide into insanity and occult practices firsthand. Is it possible these disturbing tales are accurate? It’s advisable to watch this film ready to pause – there are numerous subtle elements that could easily be overlooked during an initial viewing. This is a strong debut from the developing independent studio, Cryptic Pictures.
