Synopsis

In 1985, Richard Linklater, a former oil rig worker, founded a film society in Austin, Texas, dedicated to showcasing classic art-house and experimental films for local film enthusiasts. The group became a nonprofit, the Austin Film Society, and secured funding to bring James Benning, an acclaimed filmmaker, to Austin. Linklater and Benning bonded over their shared passion, forging a lasting personal and intellectual connection that led to frequent meetings. Benning had been independently making low-budget films since the 1960s, while Linklater was just starting to make short films. Though their careers have taken different paths – Linklater achieving mainstream success after "Slacker," and Benning remaining largely outside of mainstream cinema – the two filmmakers have remained close friends.
