Synopsis

In 1968, Eddie Adams captured a photograph in 1/500th of a second of Saigon police General Nguyen Nyoc Loan executing a Viet Cong guerilla. Some believe the image marked a turning point in the Vietnam War. The photograph earned Adams fame and a Pulitzer Prize, but he was deeply troubled by the impact it had on General Loan. He often said that the lives of both the victim and the general were destroyed that day, though some argued a third life was lost as well. Adams, like many artists, struggled with perfectionism, finding little satisfaction in his work. He pursued a varied career photographing for publications like Life, Time, and Penthouse, but he repeatedly returned to documenting wars – a total of 13 conflicts. Eventually, he grew weary of war photography and shifted his focus to celebrity portraits, finding it less emotionally taxing. During his time with Parade Magazine, he photographed figures ranging from Clint Eastwood and Louis Armstrong to Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.
