Randolph Scott and Cesar Romero do an acceptable job with this initial telling of the Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday narrative. Scott’s character shows up in Tombstone, a town whose name seems fitting given that a local saloon has just been riddled with bullets and its residents are huddled outside. At their request, he takes a weapon and goes inside—soon reappearing, pulling the shooter across the street by his feet. He then becomes the new town marshal, working alongside his medical friend, and together they begin to establish law and order. Doc struggles with alcohol dependency, and one night when he begins firing indiscriminately, his companion must step in, which puts their bond to the test and prompts both men to re-evaluate themselves. The conversations feel somewhat unnatural, but a capable ensemble cast—including John Carradine, Binnie Barnes, and Ward Bond—helps elevate the film. It’s brief, uncomplicated, and despite its rudimentary production values, it remains engaging until the well-known gunfight at the OK Corral arrives toward the end. This story has been revisited in other versions over the years, but this one is still a worthwhile presentation of a familiar tale about the conflict between good and evil, camaraderie, faithfulness, and retribution.
