Synopsis

"Te Pito o Te Henua" (The Navel of the World) follows the community preparing for Rapa Nui's biggest annual celebration, the Tāpati Rapa Nui Festival. For nine days, Rapa Nui families honor ancient traditions through athletic competitions, cultural displays, and ceremonies showing respect for the island's land, water, and natural world. The festival also includes the crowning of a Queen to represent her people throughout Polynesia and internationally. The film focuses on 19-year-old Vaitiare and her family as they work towards her becoming Queen, reflecting the island's broader struggle for greater autonomy and global recognition.
