Synopsis

It May Be That Beauty Has Strengthened Our Resolve, the first in a series by film critic Nicole Brenez and filmmaker Philippe Grandrieux, profiles Masao Adachi. Adachi rose to prominence in the 1960s Japanese New Wave as a screenwriter for directors like Nagisa Oshima and Koji Wakamatsu. He later directed experimental films that combined radical political themes with sexploitation elements. A 1971 trip to a Palestine Liberation Front training camp inspired his controversial documentary, Red Army/PFLP: Declaration of World War, co-directed with Wakamatsu. Subsequently, Adachi joined a faction of the Japanese Red Army in Lebanon, remaining there until 1997 when he was deported to Japan to serve a sentence for passport violations.
