CinemaSerf on Treasure of Monte Cristo

This seemed more promising on paper, but the effort to update (and transpose to an American setting) the Monte Cristo story didn’t quite work for me. Glenn Langan, giving a performance of limited range, takes on the part of “Edmund Dantes,” a contemporary sailor. He lands in San Francisco and immediately encounters some rough characters while intervening to save "Jean" (Adele Jergens). Comforting her results in a hasty marriage, but is she genuine? Could she be attempting to extract information about the treasure belonging to his forebear—a treasure that has apparently made its way across both the Atlantic Ocean and the United States! If you’re hoping for sword fights or a story of revenge and deception, look elsewhere. This isn't that kind of film; instead, it’s a low-budget film noir that employs the Monte Cristo treasure as a framework for a rather improbable and absurd narrative, featuring performers who are only passable and delivering a sluggish script. Coupled with some rudimentary production values, I felt somewhat misled by the whole thing.
