The film initially presented a reasonably believable plot, but it quickly devolved into something nonsensical. If characters are trying to escape from danger, wouldn't they try retracing their steps through the entrance if that was still an option? Or perhaps smashing a window and escaping from a ground-level area? I’m willing to overlook some cheesiness, but not complete silliness.
