Synopsis

"Gei Oni" is an historical epic following the first wave of Jewish European immigrants arriving in Palestine at the end of the 19th century. It tells the story of Fania, a young Russian immigrant, and Yechiel, a native Jew, whose lives become intertwined in an unexpected love. Seventeen-year-old Fania arrives in Jaffa with her baby daughter, her elderly uncle, and her emotionally fragile brother, having escaped a pogrom that killed the rest of her family. With nowhere else to turn, Fania marries Yechiel, a widower caring for his two children after his wife died of malaria. They journey to a small settlement near Safed, where Yechiel and other settlers are attempting to cultivate the land bought from local Arabs. Fania carries a painful secret she cannot share, but her marriage to Yechiel remains incomplete until he learns it.
