Synopsis

Srubov works for the CHEKA, Lenin's secret police formed after the Bolshevik Revolution. Their methods are swift and brutal: arrest, a brief interview, a ten-second trial, and execution for intellectuals, aristocrats, Jews, clergy, and their families. Victims are shot naked, five at a time, facing wooden doors, leaving no trace of their final moments, just anonymous bodies. Daily, the court conducts its sham trials, executions take place, and bodies are loaded onto wagons. Srubov is emotionally detached, sexually troubled, and intensely intellectual, estranged from former friends and family. As he grapples with the meaning of the revolution and the CHEKA's purpose, he descends into madness.
