A woman who’s clearly not right manages a run-down motel made up of individual cabins in southwest Arkansas. During one particularly stormy night, the seven people staying there find themselves dealing with some strange occurrences as they attempt to understand what's happening. “Mountaintop Motel Massacre,” released in 1983, is an obscure slasher film that borrows from movies like “Psycho,” “Black Christmas,” and the initial two installments of "Friday the 13th," while also incorporating a Southern Gothic atmosphere similar to “Squirm” and “Eaten Alive.” It prioritizes creating a creepy feeling over excessive violence, and it has enough intriguing aspects to hold your interest even though it’s among the weaker entries in the genre. The characters are well-developed, and Virginia Loridans (as Tanya) is charming with her lovely brunette hair. Jill King also stands out as Lorie, the troubled woman's daughter; this was her sole film appearance. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes and was filmed in Caddo Parish, northwestern Louisiana, primarily at an old fishing camp on Cross Lake, along with locations in Oil City, Mooringsport, and Shreveport. Southwest Arkansas is located roughly thirty to thirty-five minutes north. GRADE: B-
