It makes you think about how many viewers today might instantly feel bad for Chaplin’s factory worker as he tries to keep pace with technology's constant push forward. The film begins with him being used without his consent for a device that seems equally suited for cleaning teeth and feeding him – a supposedly clever invention meant to save time, money, and boost output. Of course, it turns out to be completely false, but that’s only the beginning of the strange, often silly concepts that see our unfortunate hero using all his energy and intelligence just to stay ahead of these so-called "improvements," as well as practically everyone he meets while struggling along in a humorous way! Meanwhile, Paulette Goddard—a woman who is hungry, homeless, and an orphan—is caught stealing bread by someone rather condescending; she runs into Chaplin on the street during her escape, and the two quickly team up for more entertaining adventures. Chaplin’s performance in this film is remarkable – his physical grace, comedic timing, and forward-thinking direction, not only of the movie itself but also regarding society's future, still feels powerful today, 85 years after its initial release. It critiques modern times, but it isn’t simply against progress; instead, it thoughtfully considers what and who is disregarded—and that includes more than just manual laborers. The scenes with the ice skates in the department store are wonderful to watch, combining charm, humor, and skill – and I enjoy his habit of drinking rum! This really deserves to be seen on a large screen because there's so much happening.
