Frank Ochieng on Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

· Oct 16, 2015

The latest installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series delivers another thrilling experience, continuing a franchise known for its bold and energetic productions. Tom Cruise, still displaying youthful enthusiasm, reprises his role as IMF super spy Ethan Hunt, ensuring audiences won't be disappointed by this action-packed chapter. Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie brings a powerful energy to ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.’ The film is notably reminiscent of the original 1996 movie, which initially faced criticism for straying from the iconic television series. However, over time, a dedicated fan base developed, eager for more of Cruise’s daring escapades and his team's clever schemes. ‘Rogue Nation’ provides exactly what fans want: an exciting spy thriller that satisfies summertime entertainment cravings and perhaps even offers a nod to the legendary James Bond. The film feels like a throwback to the early days of the series, and much of its appeal comes from McQuarrie's direction, smart writing, and the imaginative stunt work—much of which Cruise performs himself. The promotional materials offer glimpses into the intense action that awaits viewers, featuring scenes of Hunt clinging to an airplane, plunging down a waterfall, and racing on motorcycles. The story has a lively feel as Ethan Hunt works to stop a dangerous enemy (Sean Harris) and dismantle a shadowy organization called the Syndicate. Complications arise when a top CIA director (Alec Baldwin) suggests shutting down the IMF, prompting head honcho Brandt (Jeremy Renner) to navigate political pressures and past failures. Cruise’s portrayal of Agent Ethan Hunt is captivating in this eye-popping actioner. The film moves at a relentless pace, keeping viewers on edge with exotic locations, elaborate opera houses, intense fight sequences, and over-the-top villains. Cruise's willingness to embrace the mischievousness and mayhem contributes significantly to the installment’s success. Supporting actors like Simon Pegg as Benji and Ving Rhames as Luther add depth to the proceedings, while Rebecca Ferguson shines as an enigmatic female lead whose trustworthiness is questionable—a welcome addition that elevates the film. Tom Hollander provides a bit of humor as the unpredictable British Prime Minister. McQuarrie, who previously collaborated with Cruise on ‘Jack Reacher,’ faced a challenge in matching the high standards set by previous directors like Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, and Brad Bird. However, given his success as an Oscar-winning screenwriter for ‘The Usual Suspects,’ McQuarrie’s vision for this fifth installment proves to be just as impactful as those of his predecessors. With its impressive visuals and sophisticated style, ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’ comes closest to capturing the elegance and excellence associated with Agent 007.
