Intelligence officer Edwin Layton, portrayed by Patrick Wilson, voices concerns about an impending Japanese assault, but his warnings are ignored, allowing the Japanese to launch an attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Following this, Admiral Chester Nimitz, played by Woody Harrelson, quickly takes over command of the US Pacific Fleet, which has been significantly diminished. The story then moves forward, showing events culminating in the Battle of Midway between June 4 and 7, 1942, after the Doolittle raid on Tokyo & Honshu approximately four and a half months later. Ed Skrein embodies confident pilot Dick Best, while Dennis Quaid appears as carrier commander William "Bull" Halsey. “Midway” (2019) focuses on the Battle of Midway and related events without incorporating an unnecessary fictional storyline, unlike “Pearl Harbor” (2001). Even though I enjoyed “Pearl Harbor” and still appreciate it, “Midway” prioritizes historical accuracy and is consistently captivating throughout. The film’s main characters are all based on actual people, and each receives a memorial tribute at the end of the credits. The 1976 version doesn't measure up because Roland Emmerich had access to CGI technology that allowed for realistic depictions of the battle sequences occurring in and around the Pacific Ocean near Midway Atoll, situated just over a thousand miles west of Hawaii. The movie effectively places you directly within the action, experiencing the conflict from the water, the air, and even below the surface. It’s an exhilarating, disturbing, and enlightening experience. The film's length is close to two hours and eighteen minutes. GRADE: A-
