Wuchak on Lawn Dogs

6/10 · Jan 2, 2020

"Lawn Dogs," released in 1997, possesses a strong foundation—a compelling storyline, capable performers, and appealing settings—but ultimately falters somewhat in how it’s presented. The film centers on an athletic 21-year-old groundskeeper, Sam Rockwell, who resides in a rundown trailer close to an exclusive community where he maintains the lawns for its wealthy residents, people who are outwardly successful but lacking in integrity. A bright 10-year-old girl, Mischa Barton, finds herself drawn to his honesty because she recognizes the insincerity of her parents, portrayed by Christopher McDonald and Kathleen Quinlan, and the artificiality of her new surroundings. Bruce McGill appears as the security guard for the complex. This drama incorporates satire but struggles in certain areas. Specifically, the initial scenes depicting the budding friendship between Trent (Rockwell) and Devon (Barton) feel unnatural. The writing could have benefited from some improvisation or revision to improve these crucial moments; currently, they are either adequate or simply not believable. Despite this significant shortcoming—along with a few minor issues—there's considerable merit in the film, even glimpses of genuine quality. One reviewer criticized "Lawn Dogs" for supposedly lacking a clear message. I disagree; it conveys three central themes quite plainly, and I won’t reveal them to avoid spoiling the experience for others. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 41 minutes and was filmed in Prospect, Kentucky, and its vicinity, located just northeast of Louisville, near the Ohio River. GRADE: B-
