Ivan Reitman directs Kindergarten Cop, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as John Kimble, a hardened police detective who infiltrates an elementary school classroom to apprehend drug distributor Cullen Crisp (Richard Tyson) before he can threaten his former spouse and child. Lacking any prior experience in education, Kimble quickly discovers managing the students is quite challenging. His situation becomes even more complex when he develops feelings for fellow teacher Joyce (Penelope Ann Miller). Positioned between "Total Recall" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" on Schwarzenegger’s filmography, this action-comedy provides him with a $12 million paycheck and an opportunity to embrace comedic roles. Similar to his work in “Twins” from 1988, he seems at ease when the humor is directed at himself. Given the unusual storyline, it was essential that he nail the comedy, which he does exceptionally well. The interactions between Schwarzenegger and the children are entertaining and occasionally heartwarming. Despite the lighthearted tone, the writers incorporate significant themes, which Schwarzenegger manages to convey effectively despite his limitations as an actor. The plot offers nothing unexpected, and frankly, viewers likely wouldn’t anticipate anything more from a film like this. Nevertheless, the straightforward entertainment makes it suitable for audiences of all ages. Supported by Miller & Reed, along with a group of energetic children, Schwarzenegger avoids taking himself too seriously, which ultimately benefits Hollywood. 6.5/10
