‘It Chapter 2’ doesn’t quite match the quality or polish of the first film, and it feels somewhat underwhelming when put beside it, but it remains considerably better than most horror movies released by studios. The film is sprawling, has grand ideas, is wild, clever, and isn't shy about appealing to emotions alongside its scares. This version of what could be Stephen King’s finest novel stands out in current horror films: a pair of productions built on solid connections between characters across many years, as sentimental as they are brutal, and presented with the scope of a fantasy adventure. They might also represent some of the strongest portrayals of King's stories ever made, recognizing what makes his writing (and this book specifically) so frightening and so captivating—the terror rooted in human experiences within a fantastical setting. Andy Muschietti set out to create something significant with ‘It’, and even when it falls short of its goals, you’re still happy that it tried to reach so far.
