A pharmacist named Tom Craig travels from Boston to Sacramento with aspirations of establishing his own pharmacy. During his journey, he finds himself at odds with Britt Dawson, a local tough who disapproves of Tom’s Eastern ways; however, Lacey Miller, Dawson's girlfriend, appreciates Tom’s demeanor, and together with a new acquaintance called Kegs McKeever, he begins to realize his ambitions, though Dawson and his unpredictable younger brother are set on obstructing him. This film is worth watching for those who criticize John Wayne for playing the same roles repeatedly. Here, he portrays a character quite unlike his usual tough-guy image; while he’ll inevitably be compelled to stand up for what's right, Tom Craig embodies gentility and refinement—a true gentleman. The storyline follows familiar territory: opposing forces clash, and naturally, the women involved will influence events. Nevertheless, this film offers more than just that. Its humor, largely due to the developing connection between Edgar Kennedy and Patsy Kelly, alongside the depiction of medical advancements aimed at healing the sick and set against the backdrop of Sacramento’s gold rush era, all combine for a thoroughly enjoyable experience by the time the credits roll. It earns a rating of 7.5/10.
