It seemed like a tall order to match “Kind Hearts and Coronets” (1949), and I wasn't ready for how thin this film turned out to be. It feels mostly designed to showcase Glen Powell, but even his character doesn’t quite come across right, and it’s frustrating because the best parts were already in the advertising. The story unfolds as a confession from “Becket” to a priest while he's waiting for execution. He recounts how his mother came from a rich family but was cast off when she wanted to have a child with an unsuitable musician. They struggled until her early death, leaving him seeking revenge. To make ends meet, he works at a tailor’s shop where he runs into “Julia,” an old friend who seems rather high-class (Margaret Qualley), and she puts a wicked thought in his head: what better way to inherit than to eliminate the seven people standing between him and the family fortune? Everything is going smoothly until he meets "Ruth," the girlfriend of one of his doomed relatives, and suddenly finds himself falling for her. However, “Julia,” who’s unhappily married, figures out his scheme, so now “Becket” has a lot to juggle as he tries to keep the girl, get the car, and avoid being hanged. There are a few amusing moments, but generally the story doesn't really ignite. A significant issue is that it fails to develop the characters of those who will be killed; they each have brief appearances, but their roles needed much more depth to amplify the comedic and unusual aspects of this dark comedy thriller. Ed Harris has a late appearance, which didn’t quite make sense, and I almost expected Tim Curry to pop out from behind one of the hallway's wooden panels. Qualley looks right for the part, but her character lacks the playful charm or cleverness it needed to have an impact, and I was left with a nagging feeling that someone is hoping for another film if this one makes money at the box office. It’s acceptable enough, but represents just another instance of taking something perfectly fine and trying to "improve" it seventy-five years later when there was no need.
