The local government intends to construct a bypass around the city, and the project is nearing completion. Only one section remains unfinished; it would cross a lake that was previously dammed by beavers. “Mabel” is set on preventing the construction crew from proceeding, but with most of the animal population apparently having moved elsewhere, she seems powerless to stop them from using explosives. Then she discovers that if she can bring some wildlife back to the water, the area might be saved. But how will she do it? One evening, she spots one such creature, though it isn’t happy with its new surroundings and leaves. She follows it and, after a bit of trickery, ends up in a hidden laboratory where her former professor has developed a process to connect human minds to robotic bodies so as to essentially create animals. “Mabel” is not going to give up on her mission, and quickly finds herself with a fur coat and introduced to the animal leader “George,” who now shelters all those displaced by the planned road. She realizes that she needs to unite these leaders from both above and below the water if there’s any hope of restoring balance to nature. It's unclear whether she can persuade them all to fight against the construction equipment, though. The film’s environmental message is quite direct, but presented in a friendly way with some humor and wordplay, including an amusing scene showing how leadership passes down in insect society, and even a shark that flies as we are gently reminded of humanity's place among Earth’s creatures. It avoids becoming overly emotional – not always simple when the story revolves around furry, feathered, or scaled beings – and it’s also refreshing to see local government portrayed as the antagonist rather than the usual corporations. The movie serves as a reminder that our desire for convenience is often what leads to projects that damage and/or contaminate the natural resources we all depend on. The animation quality is typical but well-done, and there's enough here to keep adults entertained too.
