We saw this film quite some time back, over two decades ago, and recently decided to borrow it from the library again for a couple of reasons. We were in the middle of watching several holiday films, and also, a friend was grieving the loss of her pet and needed something lighthearted to distract her for a while. The movie served its purpose well. There are moments that genuinely elicit laughter, along with other bits that provide some amusement. The group of actors is perfectly adequate; Catherine O’Hara is convincing as a mother, and I've been fond of Daniel Stern since his character struggled with a VCR in City Slickers. If you’re someone who has trouble separating exaggerated, fictional action from real life, you might need to avert your eyes at certain points. It won’t become part of our usual selection of holiday movies, but I'm happy we included it this year.
