Sheldon Nylander on Helvetica

8/10 · Sep 2, 2019

It’s remarkable how much intrigue there is in "Helvetica," a film examining the development and impact of a typeface. It may seem odd to make a documentary about something like that, but the narrative surrounding it turns out to be quite captivating, especially considering its lasting effect—both through its design itself and via the emergence of those who actively opposed it due to its conventional aesthetic. The story of that opposition is fascinating in its own right, and watching the film prompts an appreciation for the often-unseen effort involved in creating elements we encounter daily and routinely overlook. It’s easy to forget that everything originates somewhere (I've always thought the person who first decided to drink milk from cows must have been a peculiar individual). The documentary is worthwhile whether you’re passionate about graphic design or just want a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes of commonplace items.
