ViolettSmith on Five Nights at Freddy's

7/10 · Feb 13, 2024

Five Nights at Freddy’s turned out to be an enjoyable, albeit flawed, movie. It was a genuine thrill to finally see this adaptation after such a long wait. Right off the bat, Jim Henson’s company deserves praise for their work on the animatronics; they truly brought those characters to life. The suits look incredible, practically lifted from the game itself, and the hidden characters were also well-designed. Jim Henson's team really knocked it out of the park! I thought the actors did a wonderful job too: Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, and Matthew Lillard all seemed perfectly suited for their parts. My one disappointment is that Matthew Lillard’s character, William Afton, didn't get much screen time, especially considering he’s positioned as the main antagonist with a significant reveal at the very end. Speaking of his performance, Lillard was fantastic; I honestly can't picture anyone else in the role—he really embodied who William Afton is. One line felt out of place though: "I always come back." It didn’t make sense; how would he know that? The film also lacked scares, and it’s bizarre that Mr. Cupcake racks up the most kills throughout the entire story. *Five Nights at Freddy's* is known for its jump scares, but this movie prioritized the human characters' narrative, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing; I just would have appreciated a few more startling moments. Also, it felt odd to see all the animatronics acting so friendly when they are essentially containing children’s souls within robots. Unless those kids were born with violent tendencies, I don’t understand why anyone would be upset at the animatronics for being nice.
