I hadn't really heard about this film until recently, when I noticed it was being offered as a Blu-ray giveaway in one of my news feeds. Seeing that Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were both involved made it an instant purchase for me. The prison escape storyline isn’t exactly original; it’s more of a classic trope at this point. Many excellent books and films have either focused on that theme or included it as a significant part of their plot, so creating something fresh in that area feels challenging these days without risking it feeling tired. However, during my movie night yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this film avoids that pitfall. It also manages to combine Stallone and Schwarzenegger effectively, preventing the result from becoming an over-the-top action hero sendup. The basic plot follows a familiar pattern: the protagonist is wrongly accused, imprisoned, and then must escape. What makes it somewhat different is that our hero isn’t just any escape artist—he's actually legally trained in escapes. Stallone and Schwarzenegger both give decent performances. We all know they aren't aiming for Shakespearean levels of acting or competing for Oscars, but they deliver believable portrayals as tough-guy heroes. The villain at the prison is reasonably well-acted too. The one character who didn’t quite impress me was the person responsible for setting Breslin up. I also believe they could have emphasized the final capture of that individual more; not because he didn't deserve his fate, but because I would have liked to see a “I’m back” style confrontation between Breslin and him. Overall, it's a pretty enjoyable movie, even though prison break stories aren't among my favorites. As always, the Rotten Tomatoes rating is completely inaccurate; their ridiculous system labels it as "rotten," which is definitely not the case.
