Julia Roberts delivers a standout performance as the spirited protagonist who’s working hard to provide for her three children while maintaining employment. An unexpected event leads her to lawyer Ed Masry (Albert Finney), who offers assurances regarding compensation that ultimately fall short. She then resolves to work for him, regardless of his reservations! Chaos follows, and while organizing files, she begins noticing a significant number of medical records included in property documents. Further inquiry and conversations with community members soon indicate, both to her and her initially doubtful employer, that a major corporation has been deliberately contaminating the water supply and deceiving residents about serious illnesses affecting them. Predictably, legal representatives for the company and the established order place numerous barriers in their way, but as this factual account unfolds, we’re presented with an engagingly clear and well-crafted demonstration of perseverance and commitment. A palpable connection develops between Roberts and Finney, and with Aaron Eckhart offering occasional respite, it proves to be a captivating drama, infused with moments of wry humor, that remains effective even now.
