I went into 'Emilia Pérez' with the feeling it might not succeed, but I ended up having a good time watching it for over two hours. The musical numbers require some adjustment, and I’m not completely sold on most of them; however, surprisingly, they didn't detract too much from my experience. Without question, Zoe Saldaña is the film’s strongest asset. I appreciate her performances in many roles, particularly 'Avatar' and even her small part in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,' but this is easily the best work I’ve seen from her across the 11 movies I’ve watched. It was truly outstanding! The supporting actors were also excellent, especially Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez; I recently saw Gomez in 2012's 'Spring Breakers,' and it's clear her acting has improved a lot. Honestly, if the cast weren’t so strong, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed this as much. I’m just now learning about all the controversy surrounding this film; that Wikipedia article is quite something to read – what a chaotic situation! This is why I prefer to tune out the outside chatter, even though it sometimes makes me feel like that meme of a person calmly eating while a fight happens around them.
