How can a character who is white and Irish-American manage to speak more fluent Spanish than the native Spanish speakers in this film? And then there’s a musical featuring lyrics like "penis" and "vagina," while also promoting gender transitions? This movie seems disrespectful toward Spanish speakers, it promotes a Latinx ideology that many Latinos don't support, and it champions the use of “they/them” pronouns—which, unsurprisingly, led to Kamala Harris’s defeat. Naturally, it has received 13 Academy Award nominations. But those nominations certainly don’t reflect its quality. It's poorly made; a genuinely bad film, and I feel terrible for the native Spanish speakers who are mocked and demeaned by this movie. Of course, it was bound to get showered with nominations—it’s incredibly progressive. So progressive that it failed at the box office.
