"Rita," portrayed by Zoe Saldana, is an attorney in Mexico whose professional life draws the attention of "Manitas," a drug lord wielding considerable influence over the country’s synthetic drug trade. He maintains a heavily guarded and mobile existence. The question arises: what does he want from "Rita"? Enticed by a substantial sum of money, she agrees to a risky meeting to discover his intentions. She receives an unexpected revelation when she learns that he is determined to undergo a gender transformation. "Rita" is then tasked with the highly sensitive job of locating a surgeon who can facilitate this change for "Manitas," now intending to become "Emilia." This undertaking presents significant danger not only for the lawyer but also for the gangster and his family, who must be relocated and convinced that their patriarch has disappeared. The events that follow challenge both characters, particularly as the transitioning figure struggles with letting go of his wife, “Jessi” (Selena Gomez), and their two young children. Will he manage to remain absent from their lives permanently, or will he give in to temptation and disrupt the family dynamic? While the narrative occasionally feels disjointed and character development sometimes lacks depth, Karla Sofía Gascón delivers a compelling performance as a ruthless killer who experiences more than just physical change over the drama’s four or five-year span. Saldana also anchors the story with an engaging portrayal of a woman who has seemingly lost trust in the system's ability to improve conditions for ordinary people and instead chooses to operate from within the opposing side. Musical sequences are incorporated throughout, some more effective than others at conveying tenderness, affection, desire, and rage; however, it’s clear that exceptional vocal talent is not among the film's strengths. I felt the ending was somewhat hurried and ultimately underwhelming, but overall the movie sheds a provocative light on perspectives regarding gender identity, as well as corruption and the comparatively low value placed on human life in a place where people frequently work for others. The runtime extends just beyond two hours, and once it gains momentum, it moves at a brisk pace, making for an enjoyable viewing experience that addresses significant themes worthy of attention.
