I’ve never really warmed up to Aardman’s longer movies. The stop-motion animation quality remains consistently impressive, but the narratives and characters sometimes feel underdeveloped – something that definitely happens with this one. We meet some prehistoric people living ordinary lives when an asteroid hits, disrupting their meals and leaving behind a glowing ball they discover can be kicked around—and so, football is invented! A while later, "Dug" and his friend "Hognob" get involved in a mammoth hunt that leads them to encounter “Bronze Age” warriors residing in a walled city ruled by the tyrannical "Lord Nooth," who’s after global control. The cavemen are forced to leave their homes and run for safety—everyone except "Dug," who is mistaken for a football player, leading to a wager: his team against the Bronze Age warriors. Victory means they can go back home safely; defeat means servitude in the mines. There isn't much complexity to the story; it’s quite straightforward, and the humor leans toward the physical style seen in “Wallace and Gromit,” but I suppose if it works... The uncomplicated characters are enjoyable, and the dialogue and action sequences keep things progressing at a good pace for what should have been around an hour. I appreciated the football highlights reel booth—a nod to "Saint & Greavsie" that British viewers who remember Saturday afternoons will get. However, this isn’t really geared toward children, which is a positive thing. There's some suggestive humor woven in, and while it may not be their finest effort, it's still easily enjoyable.
