In September 1944, a group of young people prepares to cross the Vistula River to support the battle for Warsaw during World War II. Tadeusz, a poet with amputated legs and unwavering resolve, is central to their mission. Their journey intensifies when they meet Katarzyna and officers from both the Polish Home Army and the Soviet-backed AL. They face a dangerous encounter with Nazi soldiers trying to escape a trap. A devastating event occurs when Katarzyna is raped in front of Tadeusz, adding to the difficulty of their task. Attempting a risky river crossing in two boats, the group is overwhelmed by the strong currents. The film culminates with Tadeusz falling from his wheelchair into the Vistula's dangerous waters.
