This new take on the sword & sorcery franchise stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez. A former Harper who’s now a thief (Pine) gathers an unusual team to find a magical artifact, The Helm of Disjunction, and rescue his daughter from a deceptive Lord (Hugh Grant) and his Red Wizard partner (Daisy Head). Among those joining the quest are a fierce barbarian (Rodriguez), a novice sorcerer (Justice Smith), a tiefling with shape-shifting abilities (Sophia Lillis), and an aristocratic paladin (Regé-Jean Page). "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (2023) is a fresh start for the series that originally appeared from 2000 to 2012. While it’s undeniably the strongest film in terms of production quality, I personally found the earlier installments—namely “Wrath of the Dragon God” (2005) and “The Book of Vile Darkness” (2012)—to be more engaging due to their more serious tone. Similar to the 2000 release, it makes it clear from the beginning that it’s not intended to be taken too seriously. If you're willing to accept its playful nature, it provides a pleasant and disposable fantasy experience. It has a feel comparable to "Star Wars" (1977), but if the plot were set in a kingdom resembling the Middle Ages where dragons and magic are commonplace. It’s an enjoyable, entertaining adventure-fantasy with a talented cast, and Sophia Lillis stands out as the elf-like tiefling; however, it feels too long and could have benefited from greater substance. The film also borrows heavily from other works—such as the frozen prison scene from “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country,” a bald sorceress reminiscent of "Conan the Barbarian" (2011), Magneto’s helmet from the “X-Men” movies, and elements from “Thor” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The movie has a running time of 2 hours and 14 minutes and was filmed in Iceland and Northern Ireland.
