It’s hard to find anything good to say about *‘Dolittle’*. My one positive observation is that it does feel somewhat distinct from the Eddie Murphy version and possibly even the 1967 film – although I haven't actually seen that one, but its description suggests a different approach. The movie squanders a really impressive group of actors. Robert Downey Jr. takes the lead role, and you’ll also spot Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, and Jim Broadbent among the cast, plus voice performances from Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, and Octavia Spencer. However, their skills are entirely misused; I honestly didn't realize who some of them were until after the credits rolled. Downey’s performance is particularly noticeable, and not in a good way. His attempt at a Welsh accent is pretty rough – it seems like parts of it were added later during post-production. He just doesn't seem right for the part; I think Johnny Depp would have been better suited to playing Dolittle, though I’m relieved he wasn’t involved considering how bad this film is. The special effects are decent enough, but they aren't what you'd anticipate from a movie made in 2020 (or maybe 2018 or 2019) with the budget and studio behind it. The story isn't terrible, but overall it lacks energy. It really needed some sharp humor, which was missing. I’m not sure what prompted them to revisit this story, but here we are. I thought it was very disappointing.
