It's an odd film, and one I don’t anticipate revisiting, nor do I feel comfortable suggesting to others. I’m uncertain whether the changes represent an attempt to align with the source material or simply a decision by Disney to move away from portraying magic as something special, but having Dolittle mimic animal actions to communicate really detracts from the atmosphere and diminishes any sense of wonder. The idea that this is a skill one can learn also makes it feel quite ordinary; it should be an innate ability within the movie's world. Robert Downey Jr., despite expressing interest in portraying diverse roles, essentially delivered a version of Sherlock Holmes with the ability to converse with animals, complete with uncovering a scheme against the queen. The visual effects are the film’s strongest point—the computer-generated imagery is exceptionally detailed, though occasionally bordering on silly. The cast and voice acting were adequate, but the quality of the animal animation is truly impressive. Much of the viewing experience involved questioning the characters' actions and motivations. It appeared that a significant amount of material was added to the story of Dolittle—the doctor who speaks with animals—in order to justify its existence as a feature film. The narrative’s emphasis shifted considerably, and while previous versions have highlighted familial bonds, this installment opted for the familiar "lost spouse so I'm bitter" trope, which is hardly inspiring. Numerous questionable and peculiar decisions were made throughout the production that ultimately failed to enhance the overall quality.
