I’d have to say this likely ranks as my top Lars Von Trier film. The story unfolds against a backdrop of strikingly simple scenery meant to represent a small-town America, and we're introduced to "Grace" (Nicole Kidman). She arrives dressed in luxurious furs and lace, obviously fleeing from something or someone. Soon after, some threatening figures arrive in town and leave a calling card, just in case she decides to reappear... The residents seem pleasant enough—a rather unusual group of people—and the local “Tom” (Paul Bettany) develops an interest in her. Is she able to remain? At first, there’s nothing available for her to do, but slowly they begin to welcome her and she becomes a vital, almost captivated, part of their community. However, some strange maneuvering by the young "Jason" (Miles Purinton) leads things to take a darker path, and she and her prospective suitor decide it might be time for her to leave. Will they allow it? The narrative is quite harsh at times; the severity of her increasingly inhumane treatment is highlighted by a cast that includes an almost intimidating Lauren Bacall, as well as strong performances from Blair Brown, Ben Gazzara, and Philip Baker Hall, all of whom effectively show just how false the town’s appearance really is. Kidman is exceptional—possibly the finest I've seen her in a film. She shares a powerful connection with Bettany, who is also at his best, and the stage lighting, limited settings, and overall simplicity of the production are very effective leading up to an ending that I worried might not live up to my expectations—but it certainly does! This is definitely worth seeing. It showcases both the good and bad sides of humanity – but with a strong emphasis on the latter.
