I feel I need to say upfront that I haven’t read the book series this film adapts, and perhaps if I had, I might have enjoyed those stories more. As for the movie itself? It struck me as fairly unremarkable. The promotional material describes a dystopian setting, but we aren't really shown how things arrived at this point beyond the usual explanation of “there was a war.” The world presents a strange combination of basic post-apocalyptic survival and advanced technology. The way people are divided into groups…it seemed pretty silly to me from the start, and the notion that individuals couldn’t possibly belong to more than one group felt completely unrealistic. How could it possibly maintain order by intentionally separating people in opposition to each other? Trying to put those issues aside, what about the rest of the film? It was alright, I suppose. It gave me a similar feeling to reading a young-adult novel and I’d say this movie is best suited for a younger audience. The storyline is quite foreseeable. There's the initial training phase where Tris naturally makes some friends, particularly bonding with one of her instructors. As expected, there’s also an unpleasant character thrown in. One thing that does set the film apart are the dream sequences, which aren't terrible. Later on, Tris begins to uncover the villains’ plans and, predictably, goes off to save everyone. These sections are straightforward and predictable as well. The ease with which Tris and a few of her companions manage to sneak into the enemy’s lab or headquarters is pretty unbelievable. It certainly helps that it seems only the good guys can shoot accurately or fight effectively, with occasional exceptions when the script demands it. As far as I understand, this movie is based solely on the first book in the trilogy, so perhaps it's not surprising that it concludes with a lot of unresolved issues. But honestly, they battle their way to thwart the plot, eliminating many people along the way, and then leave the mastermind behind this awful scheme lying unconscious but alive on the floor before departing. That just seemed foolish! It’s not a terrible movie, but I don't understand why some people give it such high marks.
