Jiang Wen’s exceptional film about war runs for a considerable length—140 minutes—but its pacing is so effective that it seems much shorter. Throughout the story, there's a humorous quality which functions as both a way to lighten the mood and to highlight the powerful anti-war and rejection of nationalism themes.
