This last appearance for Harrison Ford as "Jack Ryan" is considerably more enjoyable than his earlier work on "Patriot Games" from 1992 – which will come as relief to some. This time around, he steps into the role of his ailing mentor, “Greer” (played by James Earl Jones), becoming Deputy Director of Intelligence at the CIA. The focus is on efforts to dismantle a notorious drug cartel in Colombia, but it doesn't take long to discover that there are hidden agendas within the US government, with numerous individuals proving disloyal, and "Ryan" seems destined to be blamed when things begin to unravel. It’s a well-made spy thriller, featuring an intricate storyline interspersed with some longer action sequences and respectable acting from Ford, Willem Dafoe as the double-crossed enforcer “Clark,” and the pairing of “Ritter” (Henry Czerny) and "Cutter" (Harris Yulin) leads "Jack" to question whether he’d be better off aligning himself with the drug traffickers! It does run a bit long, and it admittedly requires roughly thirty minutes for the plot to develop momentum; however, once it does, it's a worthwhile version of a more thoughtful narrative about corruption, dishonesty, and damage control that remains relevant even three decades on.
