The activities of these drug cartels pose a serious threat to the safety and security of the United States. This installment—the third film based on Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan stories, and Harrison Ford's second time in the starring role—is a well-organized political thriller. Adapting Clancy’s lengthy novels is challenging, but the filmmakers, led by director Phillip Noyce, have succeeded in keeping the movie moving at a good pace and smart for worthwhile entertainment. The story centers on America's efforts to combat drug trafficking and the Colombian cartel that controls these operations. As expected, there’s plenty of suspicion within the halls of American government, which results in corruption and misuse of authority, placing Jack Ryan squarely in the position of uncovering and eliminating those damaging the nation’s reputation. This film will appeal to viewers who appreciate political intrigue, but also enjoy extended conversations on similar topics. The presence of a strong cast bringing life to the screenplay (written by Donald E. Stewart, Steven Zaillian, and John Milius) is certainly a benefit, adding believability to the deceptive schemes. There's a feeling throughout that this could have been an even stronger film, particularly considering its length of 2 hours and 20 minutes; the computer-related scenes are questionable, and the ending feels underwhelming. Nevertheless, it features talented professionals both on screen and off—and Clancy’s writing is exceptional. Taking all of this into account, there are good reasons to watch and appreciate it if you're a fan of political thrillers. 7/10
