As somebody who really appreciates Al Pacino’s work—his performances in films such as 'Heat', the 'Godfather' series, and particularly 'Dog Day Afternoon' stand out—and also held a significant fondness for Bridget Fonda ('Single White Female,' to name one), I must say I was quite let down by this movie. It’s especially regrettable considering how much I enjoyed director Harold Becker’s earlier film, 'Sea of Love', which also featured Pacino. The initial portion felt pretty good and kept me engaged, but after that, it lost my interest and became overly verbose and unoriginal. It's hard to say whether the issues stemmed from the writing itself or how it was handled on screen. I’m not the biggest John Cusack fan myself (I think he shines more in comedies, like his sister Joan), but he had a strong supporting cast that felt underutilized—Martin Landau, Anthony Franciosa and Danny Aiello. These actors seemed perfectly suited for their parts, so based on what was on paper, it really should have been much better. I’ve often questioned why this film did so poorly at the box office, and now I think I understand the reason. Some adjustments to the storyline—even just minor changes—could have made a difference, perhaps adding some suspense or (though I generally dislike such predictable Hollywood approaches) a bit of romantic spark (Fonda's presence was squandered; they might as well have cast someone else). Overall, it felt like a missed chance. It’s worth watching if you’re into dramas about corruption, but go in without expecting too much, and there’s really no need to see it again.
