This film exists far outside the bounds of what’s believable – and that’s entirely deliberate. It’s baffling, tangled, totally ridiculous, and unrealistic. I honestly don’t know if those choices make it good or bad. It’s difficult to assign a rating and hard to draw any comparisons to other films, although it does bring to mind the work of David Lynch. If you find yourself bewildered after watching, let me quickly clarify what's going on. The movie draws parallels between disturbed, schizophrenic individuals and film censors. The reason is that the psychotic killer in the story loses his grip on reality. Likewise, people involved in censorship supposedly lose their ability to tell fantasy from truth – at least, that’s the argument being made. Censorship is often defended with the idea that depictions in movies would become real if left unchecked. Of course, ordinary people can differentiate between fiction and life, but those with schizophrenia cannot, so censorship is presented as a necessity to prevent them from copying what they see on screen. However, by suggesting that fiction could turn into reality, the censors reveal their own inability to separate the two. If violent movies truly caused violence, then according to their reasoning, these censors would themselves become the most dangerous people imaginable, given how many graphic horror films they watch. Still, we’ve never seen a censor go on a killing spree – except in this movie itself, which would naturally be labeled a "video nasty." And that's precisely what the filmmakers were going for.
