It seemed like things couldn’t possibly improve further... My initial thought after watching was that there had to be an error with the Academy Awards nominations. Rooney Mara ought to have been considered for a lead role, instead of Cate Blanchett being placed in supporting. It appears the people involved may have misinterpreted what constitutes a leading character. The swap doesn't really make sense; honestly, the Oscars rarely do. The plot itself was alright, but the adapted screenplay and direction were superb, particularly the music. Just for the final scene alone, you might find yourself wanting to give it a higher rating than you initially planned. I didn’t anticipate that the movie would be as good as it turned out to be, so I'm not disappointed with how everything played out. Honestly, the last thing I wanted was to see Cate Blanchett nude in this film. There are numerous reasons why – perhaps it’s a matter of respect, or her age, or simply that she isn’t attracted to me – but knowing the subject matter, I was hoping that wouldn't happen. And naturally, it couldn’t be avoided; otherwise, the movie would lose its essence and power. Ultimately, it exceeded my expectations. Both actresses performed well, though Rooney Mara stood out considerably. Regardless of which category she is nominated in for the Oscars, I will be pleased if she takes home the award. It's not essential viewing, but a respectable film with some truly outstanding moments. 7/10
