After eighteen years behind bars for rape, "Cady," played by Robert De Niro, is freed from prison and immediately shows up at the home of his former lawyer, "Bowden" (Nick Nolte). He arrives with a cigar and a red sports car, quickly making it clear he intends to make the man’s life difficult. The reason? Apparently, the attorney concealed some evidence during the original trial that could have questioned the reliability of the victim's testimony – and now “Cady” is after retribution. I was initially hesitant about this remake, as I greatly enjoyed the 1962 film with Robert Mitchum; it’s hard to top. This one isn’t quite up to that standard, largely due to the color cinematography and what feels like a miscast Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange. De Niro is excellent portraying the calculating and truly unpleasant character, while Martin Scorsese builds suspense, allowing feelings of helplessness and control to emerge, creating a real sense of danger. Juliette Lewis deserves praise for her performance as "Danni," the lawyer’s daughter—an innocent girl who soon finds herself targeted by “Cady.” The final scene is visually striking, set on a houseboat during a rainstorm, and overall, considering it's a remake, it's not terrible.
