It’s striking how Cesare deve morire mirrors the fate of Caesar's assassins—who sought liberation but found only death—in that the prisoners recreating Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar discover freedom through performance, at least until the play concludes. The film does deviate from reality, presented in a documentary style within a “high-security prison” where guards are persistently absent – although there’s an amusing moment when three of them briefly appear to argue about whether Antony is "obliging" or something harsher—and the prisoners generally get along well, aside from a brief disagreement that's quickly settled offscreen (again, without any guard involvement). Despite this, Cesare was filmed in Rome's Rebibbia prison – once home to someone who attempted to assassinate Pope JP2 – and features actual inmates with lengthy sentences for crimes like murder and drug dealing (the actor portraying the lead character bears a resemblance to a real-life Tony Soprano); it’s an unexpected glimpse into the lives of hardened criminals. Another layer of irony lies in the fact that the black-and-white rehearsal footage offers a more compelling backdrop—particularly the funeral speech delivered from the prison yard—than the largely empty stage where the play unfolds (though the Battle of Philippi, or what we see of it, is quite impressive); as a result, the rehearsals take up most of the film’s concise 75-minute length.
